Farm animals form a critical link in the plastic particle cycle. Plastic debris, including MNPs, originating from human activities, inadequate waste management and environmental conditions, is accumulating in the agricultural environment and enters farm animals through the uptake of MNP contaminated food sources and water. MNP uptake forms a potential risk for the health of farm animals and may result in MNP transfer to humans via animal-derived food products, which may potentially impact human health.
